A ORORS attempt to squeeze was lately made on a Chinese merchant who imported - quantity of aniseed star into the Canton province. He had cleared at the Customs at Canton, and received a certificate for 100 ostties of the goods, the duty on which he had paid. When he arrived, however, at the Fatahan Barrier, the correctness of the certificate was disputed, the, package being found to weigh 119 catties instead of The Customs people detained the goods and demanded $50 for fte liberation and that of its owner. The man remnon- strated, and urged that the 109 cattles were the net weight of the goods, while the Cus toms surely could not charge him duty for the tere. A great crowd was collected, and the man onlisted so much sympathy that the throng threatened to de personal injury to the Barrier officials, who, luckily for themselves, gave way to popular feeling and wisely retired.
THE Athletis Sports were continued to-day. The weather was, if anything, rather too for running, in fact, many of the spec. tators complained of the warmth and it mast have been very trying to the competitors in the various gamos &o,
A very large attendance of spectators were present, both Foreigners and Chinese, The Band of the 28th Regt. was in atten dance and the enjoyment was greatly height- ened by their performance. The programme was gone through with punctuality and pre- cision.
