Fanny Trabner's Oriental Record contains the fob Ferdinand lowing notice of the China Review This Formoss Is the title of a publication, the first number Forward of which has lately reached us from Hong- Frang Long, where it has been set on foot as in Garibaldi Dome respects a continuation of Notes and Hermann Queries on China and Japan, the extinction Humboids. of which useful serial a year or two ago has ino

as well as Isles of the South been much regretted in Europe In China. Thepresent publication, judging James Wilson by the number now before us, is intended to James Vinicombo cupy a position, as regarda China and the Lathley Rich neighbouring countries, somewhat similar Lord Macduff to that which has been titled in India by the Marion Calcutta Review. The great degree of at- tention that has been bestowed of late years upon the investigation of. Chinese literature, antiquities, and social developments, to say noting of linguistic studies, has led to the Borumulation of important acores of inform ation, rendering some such channel of pub. licity as is now provided extremely desir. able; and contributions of much interest may fairly be looked for from the members of the foreign consular services, the Chinese Customs corps, and the missionary body, among whom a high degree of Chinese scholarship is now assiduously cultivated, and who are severally represented in the first number of the Review by papers highly creditable to their respective authors. In 16 paper on Dr. Legge's She King, by the

Rev. E. J. Eitel, to which the place of Nautilus honour is deservedly given, an excellent Vesta summary i presented of the chronological problems and arguments involved in con- nexion with this important work. Some translations from Chinese novels and plays are marked by both accuracy and freshness of style and an account of the career of the Chinese poet-statesman of the eleventh century, Su Tung-p'o, by Mr. E. C. Bowra, is not only historically valuable, but is alig distinguished by its literary grace. Beside Audacious notices of new books relating to China and Bayan the East, which will be a useful feature of Egeria the Review, if carried out with punctuality Flamer and detail, we are glad to notice that Frolic "Notes" and "Queries" are destined to Lily And a place in its pages also. It is to be Ling feng hoped that this opening for contributions Meeanes on Chinese subjects may evoke a similar Mosquito degree of literary zoal to that. which was Thistle displayed during the lifetime of its prede Victor Emanuel cessor in the field, and that the China Review Vigilant may receive the support necessary to insure Vsadnick its continuance. The publication is intend ed to appear every two months, and will form a substantial octavo magazine.
