that one of the unfortunate follows, not be- ing able to stand this treatment any longer, declared to his comrades that he, should the plain once more try to vent his rage on him, would Temp overboard and drown him- self. A fow days later, the same boy, when at the wheel, was struck by the captain in timo, bo wrung bimeslf over the ship's side the face, and, without losing a moment's into the ocean. So determined was the unfor- tunate boy that he refused to avail of a rope which was thrown to him, and after swim- ming a few strokes he sunk and disappeared, When the barque, á splendid new vessel of a thousand tons, returned to Hamburg, the captain was denounced by the crew and brought before the Court. Although his counsel pleaded in a very eloquent and inge. nious speech for a penalty in money, he was sentenced for six months' imprisonment.
The ptain of the Swedish steamer Aug, Leffler which vessel, after being several years employed in the China coasting trade, is bound to Hamburg-was not destined to see his home again. The steamer had to call at Malta for couls, and Captain Bjortk being sick was loft behind there, from whenco a few days ago a telegram to the owners at Gothenburg brought the melan- choly intelligenes that he died on the 2ud inst.
Mr Frank Moulton has instituted through his counsel, Gen. Roger A. Pryor, a civil suit in the Supreme Court, Brooklyn, for $50,000 damages against the Rev. Henry Ward leecher. Papers have been served on Mr Beecher personally. Only a single question will be at issue in the coming suit. This will be the truth or falsity of Mir Moulton's allegation that Mr Boecher had committed adultery with Mrs Tilton. For the deter- tion of this question Mrs Tilton will be a vital witness, and will certainly be called, as well as a number of others whese testimony was excluded on the great trial. On the other hand, the question of Mrs. Tilton's character not being in any way at issue, the testimony of a large number of the witnesses produced at the Tilton-Beecher trial will not be competent; the trial will, therefore, be a brief one, and it is anticipated that it will not occupy more than a fortnight.
