Chinese soldiers have learned nothing, and, according to Colonel Bosnovsky, the troops drilled under the old system are better than the other. In the Sang-jang-foo camp alow marching is very much in vogne, as well as the "square" formation. When firing the soldiers sit down. They keep their guns. very negligently, and when Colonel Soenovsky dirented the attention of the commander to one of these gune he was assured that the guns had been received from Tientsin and after having been kept in boxes for a long time, had been issued to the troops only on the previous day.
A most ludicrous scene occurred at Peking the other day, during the rather tragic ceremony of an exeontion. It seems that seven men were led out to suffer the penalty of decapitation; but one of them, intending either a grim joke or eles a last feeble not of revenge, indicted upon himself the exquisite pain of biting his tongue very nearly in half, before his turn arrived. By the time this headsman reached him, his mouth was naturally filled with blood; and this he voided, with hearty goodwill, fell and fair in the headsman's face. The man was blinded with the shower and considerably taken aback; but the next moment the head of the vindictive individual was telling harmlessly upon the ground.
