THE BENGAL PHOTOGRAPHIC

EXHIBITION. THE Secretary of the Bengal Photo- graphic Society has forwarded us a copy of its journal for the current year, with a request that we will aid the exhibition about to take place at Calcutta in Decent- ber next by giving publicity to the condi tions under which exhibits will be receiv

ed; and urging photographers in Chins, whether professional or Amateur, to con. tribute. With this request we have much pleasure in complying, the more.. éo as we are aware that vast strides have been taken in local photographic art within the last few years. When firet introduced to native notice, the high prices obtained by the very few Europeans who were masters of the process, becapre

a temptation to the soute Celestial, ver wide awake to any chance of making money, to embark in the same line. The result was that for some years 7 packages Sundries.

however, seen an improvement in this respect, and some few native manipula tors are to be found who appear to have Buccessfully caught somewhat of the artistic feeling without which a photo graphic picture is deprived of its princi pal charm. Foreign Amateurs scent, as a body, to have woefully decreased in nu ber, but there still remain a anfficient unmber from Hongkong to Peking to furnish a few representative pictures.

According to the published rules above referred to, the Exhibition is to be opened on Monday, the 13th December Exported per Kinshan, Kín Kiang and 1869, and will be closed on Saturday the 8th January 1870. It will be open to all good Photographs, whether contri- buted by Members of the Society or others, but only atch Photographs as have been taken within two years will be allowed to compete for the Prized specified.
