THE CHINA MAIL,
HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1869.
THE HONGKONG BRANCH OF
THE ASIATIC SOCIETY. ALTHOUGH considerable interest was evinced at a recent meeting held to discuss the resuscitation of the Hong- kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society but little seems to have been done in the way of taking action. The small library, such as it is, still remains in the hands of the Secretary who, for some inscrutable reason, does not feel at liberty to take any steps towards getting it accommo- dated in the City Hall.. It is said that there yet exist in Colony members of the defunct moiety, or at least residents whose names at one time figured on the list, but so far as our enquiries bare carried us, it would appear that they are unsortain as to their status, having for somo years ceased to pay any subscrip tiona The only facts which seem clear are that there are a certain number of books in a more or less injured condition
4774 bundles and 608 pieces Iron Bars, belonging to the Society, and that nothing
Rode and Hoops,
can be done with them because nobody will some forward to claim an interest in their disposal. At the meeting lately held it was resolved to communicate with the so-called "existing nombers" of the Society, and learn if they still deemed themselves cobuected with it Whether or not this communication has been made we are unaware, but nothing has been made public respecting it. It is possible that efforts have been made to communicate with former members now in England; but if such be the case we can only chanicterize it as a simple waste of time. Departure for heve should in any case cancel the powers of a member Es a voter regarding the appropriation of funds or property belonging to a society so entirely dependent upon the local interest evinced in it.

Thore being thus a sort of dead-lock we would suggest that some definite course of action be decided upon by the secretary, the only person with whore lies the power of moving in the matter. He might at once communicate with the very few remaining members if there be any such and upon receiving their answers call a general meeting of all in- terested in the resuscitation of the society. was effected the volumes would be afford- ed upon application immediate accomm dation at the City Hall. The complation of that building would also afford the necessary room for meetings and the reorganised society would start with two desiratu completely fulfilled
It is frequently remarked that ever were the Society resuscitated there would Le no chance of its flourishing at Hong. kong. But this opinion we think arises from an erroneous idea as to the fuut tions it should aim to fulfil. If it is to be a sins qua, num that lengthy papers should be read at each meeting we admit that its prospects are not encouraging. It would however seem
us that unless they were brought forward in greater number than we at present suppose likely, one evening in every three months world afford sufficient time for their reading, As they increased in volume the inter vals between the "reading nights "might be lessened. All that we desire to imply ie that the monthly meetings of such a society may be highly instructive anl interesting without necessarily including. the reading of long essay valuable many of those read at the Shanghai Society's meetings are. Many hard- worked men who come noroas enrious or hitherto unknown facts may be quite rea dy to say so conversationally, who would be kept out of the field if required to pat in regular written form. It would of
it
course be necessary that the accretary should be furaished with a short written niemorandum of the shijeet mentioned by any inetuber, but there would be 4 vast difference between this and a formal 08 paper,
