HONGKONG, TUESDAY, MARCH
FORMOSA
30, 1869.
We have news of some interest from Formosa, an jaland which since the suppression of the recent disturbances in the North has of late ceased to figure in sensational paragraphs. It will be recollected that
some months ago, General Le Gendre, the U. S. Consal at
- է
Amoy concluded a treaty of peace and amity with the savages inhabiting the Southern portion of the Coast. The primary stipulation was that all ship- wrecked foreigners should be treated with hospitality and forwarded on to the Chinese authorities, while certain arrangements were made regarding the display of a red flag by vessels iu distress. which afforded soupe for a good deal of joking at the expense of the (as people thought) over-sanguine General, This gentleman now, however, appears to havo satisfactorily proved that his "treaty" was of a more binding nature upon the savage "contracting parties", than even that celebrated document known as the Treaty of Tientsin is upon the native authorities in China; and he put the question to the proof by visiting, in company with Mr Man, Per MADRAS" on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Customs at Taiwanfoo, and Mr Pickering, the well known of the interiot. The gentlemen ned Formosan linguist the most savage part
visited Tow-ké-took, the head chieftain of the sixteen tribes, (who ratified the engagements previously made) and spent three days in the midst of the aborigines who treated them with much hospitality
