Dr Carl von Scherzer, the Chief of the Expedition, and to whose efforts its existence is, wo believe, mainly owing, left Vienna on, the, 30th December for Trieste. and Alexandria with the object of recording his observations upon the the Suez Caual. He was to leave Suez. for Bombay and Singapore on the 4th January, and is, or should be, at this moment awaiting the arrival of the vessels at the Straits settlements. The Erherzog Friedrich will remain in this neighbourhood for the protection of Aus triun interests, while, the Donau will proceed (after calling at Bangkok) via China and Japan to San Francisco. Thence she will visit Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Calino and Valparaiso, and on through the Straits of Magalhaens to Monte Video and Buenos Area It will thus be seen that although the Expe dition is generally spoken of is connection with the Far East," it in reality am- Per braces the circumnavigation of the world.
