THE MINES AT CHEFOO. ALTHOUGH but little public attention has, for the last few weeks, been directed to the Shantung mining districts, the inte eat felt in them by a select body of experienced and hopeful miners has by no means abated. We have fortunately been placed in possession of come authen- tie details, hitherto unpublished, regard. oz.ing the mines and diggings, which are of much importance in the present state of affairs. They are derived from a visitos: to the North who has personally experi enced the ups and downs of mining life. In the popular aind gold alone seems to be identified with the metalliferous districts of Northern China. It sectus however that although rich gold diggings do exist the temptation to foreign miners

is far greater as regards other metals. The gold found near the coast is smok!! and scarce, increasing in quantity and size the further the province is pene trated. In the neighbourhood of Fingtu it would decidedly repay any company to sink shafts, though the yield of surfacegold is scarcely sufficient to more than pay expenses. There are also some unworked quartz reefs. It is of the silver, lead and antimony mines that we would, how ever, especially speak. 14 appears that some months since a body of eighteen: individuals, thrown together partly by chance and partly by design, and headed by an experienced Californian miner, commenced to try their luck at e place. called Chin-shan-tsai-some twelve miles from the foreign settlement of Yontai and about 20 miles from the town of Chefoo proper. They had determined to forego any search for gold, and cancer- trated all their energies upon seeking other metals. Much obstruction was experienced from the Chinese authorities. The villagers were forbidden to hire out mulea or carts, to supply any provisions to the miners, and finally, as we have already learned from North China pa pers, to purchase ore upon any pretext whatever. Men must live however, and the miners, who appear to have conduct ed themselves in a remarkably quiet and civil manner, were relieved from the embarrassment of either starving or
