THE BATHING HOUSE.

SIR RICKARD MACDONNELL cannot be aaid to have shown himself indifferent to the comfort of that large portion of the community who rejoice in aquatic exer cises during the warm weather. While most people would have preferred to sen the Bathing House romain in its present position (especially as the police regula tion in force compel ladies who require to be carried in chairs to abstain from using the Parade Praya, and nevertheless permit a horde of Erty Chinese to occupy the view Benta), its removal, if absolutely necessary, will be greatly facilitated by the offer made by His Excellency to aid

in the expenses of erecting a new build ing or re-erecting the present house upon another site. The proposed new site is, despite the disadvantage of au inconvenient proximity to a drain, the only one which appears at all available, while the union of Bathing House and Boat House would probably please those whose tastes lead then to perilous adven- taro in elongated and balance-losing skills. The resolution come to may therefore be considered as the best which could be taken, and we trust that the funds necessary will be speedily forth. coming.

While the removal of the Bathing House is thas a matter of public atten- tion, it would seem that there is a favor- able opportunity for returning to the subject of diverting the Queen's Road.. part of the City Hall by way of the newly constructed prays We have frequently pointed out the advantagra which would be gained by closing the carriage way across the parade ground and so leaving it, for foot passengers and perhaps chairs, one uninterrupted spread of level ground. It is true

that the road way fronting the Bath- ing House is not so wide as it should be to take the traffic of the principal Woodware.road of the city. But in the first place,

most of the foot traffic would pass by the prosent cut across, while the formation of an additional road-way inside the line of trees and building hedge would not be a very serious encroachment upon the cricket ground, while it would pro vide a road for public vehicular use, equal to the one now available. The expense, with convict labour at hand, could hardly For SWATOW, AMOY & FOO"HOW.-be very great, and we know that a large Per DOUGLAS," on Tuesday, the 9th proportion of the community would
