REPORTS OF TRADE FOR 1867.
THE Reporte of Trade for 1867, issued hearly a year after date, have at length come to band, and the opportunity is afforded of examination and criticisms. We are willing to confess that in no previous year has a compilation of such. general interest and value been given to the public, and are therefore the less dis posed to grumble at the groat delay which has taken place. Whether; however, the mercantile community, for whose bonefit these reports are primarily issued, are likely to place the improved literary merits of the volume against the with- holding of important statistics for so many months we cannot say. The volume contains reports from Newchwang, Tientsin, Chofoo, Kinking, Chinkeang Ningpo, Foochaw, Amoy Tamsini, Takow, and finally Canton; Hankow, Shanghai, and Kelung being, oddly enough, omitted Not the least. interesting portion of the collection is an appendix of papers containing amonget others a geographical sketch of Hainan from the pen of Mr E. C. Taintor. Almost all the papers, however, bear the impress of an effort to rauder thom something more than a dry detail of statistics, and, for the most part, show a fair amount of success. From Mr Macpherson's report on Newchwang, copious extracts have already appeared in our columus, quoted from our North China coutemporaries. It is decidedly the most complete resumé of the characteristics of that neighbour- hood which has yet been given to the publio, and contains in itself a variety of. matter for suggestivo comment. particular alluded to by Mr Macpherson, we cannot resist noticing the fact that Russia by a treaty. made in May, 1858, possesses the right of navigating all the fluents of the Amoor. This as boaring upon the general question of inland na vigation in China proper may some day possess significanch In fact there are 4/5 a 4/51 4/ a 4unny points in which the Russian treaty might advantageously be examined for precedents as regards the position of other foreigners in China.
