Some time ago we had occasion to remark upon the progress that Literature as repre- sented by the Tresa had made and was making in the East, and our attention has again been called to the subject by the re- ceipt of a Hongkong publication which deserves some notice and which we have much pleasure in introducing to the know-to ledge of our readers. We allude to Notes and Queries on China and Japan, published monthly by Mr Saint, the proprietor of the China Mail newspaper. This publication is well-printed on good paper, and in sizo and shape is very like its woll-known sake or prototyya at home, and is equally a sine containing very curious and useful information regarding the language, litera- ture, history, manners and customs of the Chinese and in a less degree of the Japanese. It says a good deal for the extent and stability of the footing of Europeans in Ching, that such a publication as this should be established and conducted with apparently successful vigour.
P
The publication is altogether a very in-. teresting one, and wishing it every success, we command it to the attention and support of our readers....

THE CHINA MAIL.
HONGKONG, MONDAY, JAN. 25, 1865.
In our Saturday's issue we gave an account of the recent disturbance at Swatow, the hoats of H. M. G. B. Coot- chafer having been fired upon by the
Chinese and twelve mon wounded two it a feared mortally. The Gunboat Leven has already left for Swatow, and the Rinaldo and Perseus are upda orders to leave with a detachment of marines from the Rodney. Admiral Keppel being at Canton the Botricer went up on Saturday afternoon with despatches and the Admiral returns by to-day's steamer. He intends to pro- ceed to Swatow in person, and, will, it is hoped, administer a lesson to the trucu let natives of that neighbourhood which will ensure freedom from molestation for Foreigners for some time to come. We congratulate the peace party, to whose efforts in repressing any demonstrations hostile to the Chinese we owe this and a long series of outrages, committed under the impression that they can be perpe trated with impunity, upon the highly uccessful results of their efforts. Shi ning crosses a la Burlingame are likely to in Hongkong or at any of the Forts in be planted (per invitation) plentifully, China and Japan addressed to Egypt, or though rather as records of the departed posted in Egypt addressed to Hongkong or who have lost their lives in defending any of the Ports in Oliva and Japan, and the Exeter-hall policy than as point conveyed in the Mails by British Packet, is reduced from Twenty-four Conte to Twelysing out favourablo apots for missionary Cents.

It is with extreme regret that we bays to record the perpetration of one of the most brutal mundora which has disgraced the annals of this Colony, the victim being Mr W. W. Holworthy, Deputy Assistant Superintendent of the Military Store Department. The unfortunate gentleman went for a walk yesterday in the direction of Pekfolum, and at one o'clock was spoken to by the engineer of the waterworks there. At half past oris his, lifeless body as discovered about 200 yards from the Gap Junction. The wounds inflicted were exceedingly savero. What adds to themystery of the occurrence--for scarcely half an hour clapsed between his being conversed with and discovered murdered -is, that he was accompanied by a pure bred bull dog, and that such an animal would scarcely have allowed the assailant of his master to escape unpunished. In the introductory chapter to the notices of the Treaty Ports of Japan will be found as vecinct history of that Empire, together, with remarks on its governnient, geography, and limita, which will be found particularly interesting us throwing a considerable light on a part of the world so long entirely, and still comparatively, unknown to Europeans. The descriptions of Nagasaki, Tedo; Yo- kohama, and the other Treaty Porta of Japan, are as elaborate and entertaining as thons of the Chinese ports. A copious in dea and a useful appendix containing tipay hints and much appropriate advice to tra vellers and others, is also included in the volume. The entire work affords a vast amount of information, pleasantly written, and we doubt not will be perused with and we do many, who will never visit the
