(From the "Struts Times," July 27, 1868.)
Some time ago we had occasion to remark upon the progress that Literature at ropae- sented by the Press had made and was making in the East, and our attention has again been called to the subject by the re- ceipt of a Hongkong publication which descrves souro potice and which we have much pleasure in introducing to the know ledge of our readers. We allude to Notes and Queries on China and Japan, published monthly by Mr Salut, the proprietor of the China Afail newspaper. This publication is well printed on good paper, and in size and shape is very like its well known bawe sake or prototype at home, and is equally a mine containing very curtons and useful information regarding the language, litera ture, history, manners and customa of the Chinese and in a less degree of the Japanese, 16 says a good deal for the extent and instability of the footing of Europeans in China, that such a publication as this shontd be established and conducted with apparantly successful vigour. 4
