time enough to see about the contents of those roonis, when they are completed; and at home we should probably admit this as a perfectly valid reason for let- ting matters stand over. Bat, when the very short average of a foreigner's residence in Hongkong is taken into consideration, it is evident that if the present generation of Colonists are to. enjoy the results of good establialiments, no time should be lost in making ar angements. The matter might be man aged with extreme case, and with so little outlay of time or trouble on the part of the committee, that there is really no valid reason for inaction Appoint a librarian and curator-and we venture to think that gentlemen could he found to accept these posts without salary-and instruct them to do their best in getting promises of books and material for the rooms in ques tion, engaging merely to pay the postage of their correspondence. By these means we should in a few months know what could be conteal on in the way of vo luntary help, without which the museum at least could scarcely be inaugurated, or the directors would learn that but very slight contributions of either books or material could be counted on without purchase and would thus be enabled to form a definite conclusion as to the ad- visability of attempting to carry out this portion of the (supposed) programme
There would however, we imagine, be a very ready response on the part of scientific residents in China to meet the views of the committes, especially if the museu partook of the nature of a lean exhibi- tion. Many would gladly permit acti clea which they had collected to remain on public view if it was understood that they would be well cared for and return- ed when departure from the country ren- dered the owners desirous of withdraw.
