HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 1868.:

THE COMING ECLIPSE We have already given extracts from European and Indini journals which proved the intense interest with which the coming eclipse is regarded by scienti- fio men in all quarters of the globe. It is not therefore to bo wondered at if the United States journals allude to the forthcoming event in terms of enthusiasm similar to those which bave appeared in the more sober columns of English or continental publications. And let the non-scientific sneer as they nay, there is some cause for regarding the eclipse of the eighteenth as an occurrence so nuparallel- led as to excite a most intenso interest. It is not merely that it will be of unusual duration, or that the area over which it will be visible exceeds that embraced in any former oconrience of a like usture. It is that these measurements of time and.

It is scarcely to be hoped that Hang-. kong possesses any residents of so scien tific a bias as to render them desirous to obtain accurate observations. Much may, however be done by the ordinary observer, and we trust that those who take the trouble to closely observe the phenomenon, will record the vesulta of their observations. We shall probably be able to witness but a partial abscurs tion of the sun's hight; but even this cantot fail to be of great interest,

GOVERNOR HORTA'S DELI VERANCE SENHOR José Maria da Ponte e Horta, in surrendering the reins of the government of Macao to his successor, Senhor Senza declared that a matter of political honour bad induced him to solicit from H. F. N. the King of Portugal a relief from that charge, and that H. F. M. had bear pleased to accede to his request.

Ele

took credit for delivering the colony 30 Senhor Souza in a condition more trat quil and "secure" than that in which he received it from the hands of his prede cessor, in whose steps, however, he had "honorably followed." He had devoted to the subject of Macae emigration the most serious care and reflection. Senhor, Forth then remarked, “Your Excellency. will also see, by a process of law which 1 Juve instituted in a neighbouring calony, that have not allowed to pass thnoticed and without emphatic protest [en urteck on the honour of the Portuguese, papie and the honour of the highest functions aries of our country."

The all on to the triple libel case against t China Mail is here too evident to mistaken; and it will be observed th Senhor Horts only refers to it as it fects the honour of the Portugue name and the honour of the highest fun tionaries" of Portugal. Why, verit this is what we have had in view dariv the many years that we have assa the coolie trade, as carried on at Maca We have been sensitive for the god fame of our ancient ally, and desirous prevent its soutcheon being blotched the blood of kidnapped Chinamen

It is not, however, our present pri pose to enter on the general topic of 11 Macao coolle traffic, but as Sr. H. plum himself on "protesting" against the la guage used by the China Mail with spect to the Macao coolie trade, may ask did be permit the following stro #opinion" to pass without notice? was given by His Excellency Sir Ricing MacDonnell, Governor of Hongkon at a Meeting of the Hongkong Legish tire Council hold on May 15, 183 when Senhor Horta was in the height his glory as Governor of Macao. H Excellency observed --

The Governor of Macas had assure him that there were very excellent regul tions for emigrants at Macao-that in fa they were an sray of frou labour; by when enquiry was made into the systen it was found that the Chinese authoriti no far disapproved of it that they peckai ally cut off the heads of its agents. It w stated that this Bo systera did not pe vont a large number of vessels from Muca cutting up villages upon the cost and ca turing the inhabitants-catching mad

The Mas regulations looked very well on paper, in they were in reality worthless, for any ratical craft, equippal for the purpure kidnapping, found no diftently in satisfyin the gorerament inspection at Macao."

We might extend our extracts from speeches in the Hongkong Council, quit as emphatic as Sir R.
