THE BATHING HOUSE

Ir is, we understand, the intention His Excelleney the Governor to put definito period, to the existence of t present Bathing House. We have alre dy expressed the prevailing feeling regret which is manifested at the rumo of His Excellency's intention, and wh fully admitting that he is animated by desire to render the extended Praya wo fully available as an agreeable promene than it now is, are somewhat at a loss see in what manner this and is incomp ible with the prolonged existence of t Bathing House in its present positio That alteration, or improvement, may desirable is possible. But so far as can learn, the main question consider is whether the appearance of the bai ing interferes with the prospect from t Praye. Enthusiasts in favor of the ba aver that it does not. Soine fow, a those notably amongst the least freque visitors to that portion of the town, clare that it does, and the Govern unfortunately shares the latter opinion

The proposal to allot a site at Ko loong for the re erection of the platin and enclosure after its removal from present position, finds favor with br very small proportion of the comman --that devoted to boating. The ordina professional or inainees mas is qui alive to the fact that a pull to Kowloo and back is likely to consume more ki than he feels disposed to appropriate. the pleasure of a ten minutes dip in t sea, the hours in which exercise is aible in this chinate being taken into ru sideration; while there are not a f who, though fond of a swim in the lights of bathing costume, care little for bo

The genn ingin a small seaway. feeling is nnmistakably in favor of t Bathing House being retained upon t Hongkong side, and we are somewh surprised that, in view of the favor which the Bathing House is held and ti decision which public rumour so auth ritatively credits to His Excellency, steps appear to have been taken by th Committee to bring the matter to ipsno, Assuming that the Goveruser permission to occupy the present locatio will really be withdrawn there is sure some "happy medium" between Paral Point and Kowloong at which to pit the tent of future bathers. A meeti convened for the purpose of discussi future plans could do no harm, especial if the committee took the precantion requesting the Governor to state ) intentions definitely. These known consideration of the best step to be tak .would be both advisable and satisfactor There is no absolute harry, as the p missive lease of the present site does o we believe, terminate until May no Ent if the matter be put off till the wi ter months it will be found that much the enthusiasm which prevails during t Buamer bathing season, will have porated.

In connection with the Bathing How we should like to point out one or t matters in connection with the pron nade fronting it. A regulation exi whereby chairs and carriages are pro bited from passing, and considering el. the roadway is not too broad, the regu tion in question may be useful."} there exists apparently be regulation prevent the dirtiest of Chinese cool und the lower classes of Parsees a Moormen from accupying the seats, walls, and all available points where sitting posture may be maintained. will of course be understood that we ject to the servant class of the ad named nationalities from occupying the best seats and honouring passers with obtrusive, if amused, observati And unless some regulation be made obviato this unpleasantness, it is v certain that neither the ladies or gen men of Hongkong will be likely to av themselves of the newly-constructed 1 usade. It is very easy to say tha Chinese coolis can be ordered off, but perience teaches us that u pigtailed, cal may carefully avoid any overt aci anioyance, while his proximity is a ca of intense annoyance, Eau de Cologne being an article of popular consumpt amongst the lower.class Chinese. { the other hand it is impossible to fi Ay regulation which will keep away. disreputable classes of the volong- huisance would be as great should dr ken or rowdy sailors affect the bene and there is nothing to prevent then we cannot see that any particular g will result froin the removal of the Er ing House. Of one thing we may be tuli-that it is not the proximity of Bathing House but the entire occupat of the roadway by the least savoury tion of the colonists, which renders promenade a stranger to the better clas That this can be obviated we do Bay. But if it cannot, it at least fir Que argument for the retention of Bathing House in its present conveni position,
