PRAYA WHARFAGE
In a recent issue of this journal à cor respondent who signed himself "X" advocated the croction of a line of wharf- ago along the sea wall of the yet-to-be- repaired Fraya. His proposition is to rn out, either at certain places or conil nuously, a jetty on wooden piles wo prosume and thus widen the praja to nearly double its prosent extent. Upon this, sheds and oranes to be erected to assist in unloading and loading ves sels; and the sea face would, according to his proposition, assume a totally changed appearance, and bear no small reson blance to the crowded wharves of Syduay, or any other well-known emporium of trade "beyond the sens,”
well enough on paper, and way be wall The suggestion thus put forth looks
worth discussion. But it would at pre- sent seem to us that the difficulties to be- encountered havs boon overlooked by our correspondent, though we shall ba glad to learn that we are mistaken. The depth of water at most points of the sen wall is, to begin with, a serious ob- jection. It is by no means safficient for the vessels of the most moderate draft for distance of some yards from the sea face, and "X" sun scarcely contemplate. building a jetty or jetties projecting as für into the harbour as the wharf of the Hongkong, Canton, and Macao Steam- boat Company, Arather (though we believe undecided) question is the pos sible right of the holders of Marine Lots, to object to the changes which would necessarily ensue by the conver sion of the praya from a mere thorough. fare into the road backing a busy wher At all events there are plenty of pointa upon which discussion may be raised, and we shall be only too glad if some practi cal man will take up the proposition and deal with it in an exhaustive manner. If, as suggested by X,"she praya andeca wall could be made self-supporting by such a scheme, by all means let it receive due attention. Our own impression is
at first sight, against it, but we speak from merely casual observation, and The Bremen barque New Granada, fram make allusion to the letter signed by "X" Saigon, reports the first two days. karing rather for the purpose of inciting fuller Cape St. James had strong wind from E. communications on the subject than to N.
