THE EAST INDIA TELEGRAPH COMPANY.
It is some time since any intelligence has been received of the doings of the East India Telegraph Company, a communica tion from its Secretary to this paper being, we believe, the last public intima- tion of its vitality. We are at some loss to reconcile the reported intention of speedily placing Hongkong in connection with Shanghai, with the profound secrecy which seems to shroud the steps now being, or supposed to be, taken. One would naturally expect that so important: a scheme would be fully ventilated at

THE NEW HOTEL. difficulties which the project has encoun We are glad to learns that, despite the
tered, the Hongkong Hotel has become an accomplished fact. The magnificent building to be henceforth known by that name is, we understand, to be formally opened on the 1st proximo by His Ex- cellency the Governor, assisted by the loading residents, and we sincerely wish it a long and prosperous career. So much has of late been said about the Dow Hotel that we could say but hittle with which our readers are not already acquainted. We may however mention that the billiard tables (Thurston's best) are now in course of erection and occupy. a room which is one of the finest în Hongkong, and will be ready for use in a few days. Much of the furniture which has been ordered under the care of the able manager engaged, Mr Duygun, ia being made at Canton and will suntly be delivered.

The amount, fixed on for board and lodging for a single individual is we learn $70 per month, not an exorbitant charge at the rates ruling in Hongkong

It was we believe proposed to inaugurate a new club in the building, the founders being montbers of the present English club, but we have not heard what progress lus been made in carrying out the idee. Altogether the prospects of the new Hotel are decidedly clearing, and we congratulate the directors and sharehold es upon the completion of an enterprise which will form, no suill attraction to future visitors or convenience to mingle residents,
