And to cap a long list of similar matters. far too extensive to particularise in thesa columns, we cannot help feeling malignant at the new ory that Great Britain has pO. manner of "call" to care whether Dr Livingstone be alive or dead. The same spirit shews itself now-a-days everywhere, and a toa zealous official who attempta to vindicate "prestige" stands a remark. ably good chance of being "gat upon" by his superiors. The worst of it is that" the arguments adduced in favor et peace" wid non-interference are nimost unanswerable. But we suspect that has leading articles existed at the time of the Crusides, most cogent reasons, equal- ly unanswerable, would have been found why they should not have been under takou. The fact is that a sympathy with what we may term (as formerly): the Palmerstonian Policy" arises from generous instinct which, though it will actually not hear the test of rigid rule or moral argument, has been fruitful "in" effects which have more than anght, els tended to the progressive civilization of the human race. We are afraid that we must yield to argument while we should withhold by sentiment much that is now asserted as regards our western policy, To neither the one or the other do wa admit that equally valid reasons exist for a policy of pure conciliations in the far East, aut it is no slight satisfaction to know that from oxo extremity to the other of the foreign settlements in this part of the world similar views are beld alike by British officials, merchants, ĮRGS fessional men and British residents in general.
