adherence of Chinese officials Tholi (absolute truth of moral rectitude) which constituted one of our greatest difficulties in dealing with them, we cannot congratulate ourselves on the course which we pursued under the circumstances. The Kennie confusion in dealing with Taoli is not only great, but is a certain way, symmetrical
There is some useful information in the book con- cerning the mecholy death of Captain Erbazon of the Royal Artillery and the Abbé de Luc, who were ninongst the prisoners taken by the Chinese army) near Feking in September 1550. The substance of this information is contained in a statement ntle Mr Wade and Mr (now Sir Harzy) Parkes, in May 1881, by two Chinese soldiers who had belonged to Sheug-pac's army, and in a despatch written by Sheng-pao himself a few months later than this date. The soldiers state that ou the 21st September 1860, after the battle of Pa-li-chan, Shang-pan when retreating past the temple in which Captain Babazona and the abbe de Luc were imprisoned, ordered them to be put to death, and that the soldiers who were in charge of them shon hacked their head of Sheag pau's despatch corroborates this statement in a raai- ner which would be peculiarly Chiness if it were quite unknown in other countries, He says that if there were European prisoners in the camp on the 21at September, one of two things must have happen- el to them when his army retreated they must either have escaped to their own lines, or they must have been put to death by the adldiers in the hurry and onlins of retiring quiler defeat. As it would appear that they had not escaped to their own linea, then their death at the hands of the soldiers must be assumed." The soldiers statements are further corrobarated by the discovery near the temple where Captain Brabazon
the Abbé were confiuéd, of frigments of unifor cloth. We may mention here, although the event did not necur during the period which is embraced by De Rennie's journal, that Sheng pno was put to death at Peking in 1863, having been found guilty of abusing his power and coumiting various atrocities while in command of the troops operating against the Mobammedan rebers in the provinces of Shensi in 1862,
In addition to the information about the fate of Capt. Brabazon and the Ableca Luc. 1 Rennie gives us ini chapter V. of his second volume, the story of the Coup d'Etat of November 1861, which resulted in the overthrow the regancy appointed, when the late Emperor died, to conduct the Government during the minority of the present inperor. Tung chi. In treating of these we subjects the fate of Capi. Brabazon, and the Coup d'Klat-Dr Rennie bwing to his adherence to his journal, doce not arrange his facts in very good order. The statements concerning" Capt. Brabazon are scattered over pages 122 and 144 in the 1st volume, pages 19, 45 to 51, in the 24 volume; and in Chapter V. here bells as of the Coup d'Est he sacrificee the continuity of far- ratite which a great event deusinds, by leaving the subject in the middle of the chapter to tell as of visit to the Great Wall, and of another visit to some Elephant stables in Peking,
With the exception of the information, which we may extract with sorce Trouble, about these two subjects, the book ens'sts of a narrative of trivial occurrences written in very poor English. A journal inatiñuble in cases like the defence of minute Jeuil when the sethar can write like the author of Rothen. of the Lucknow, residency or the siege of Beint, e But thente is no resemblance between the defence of the Lucknow residency or the siege of Delli, and the all routine of a year's residepes in the British legation at Peking, and De Reme as not yet ayde any perceptiable approach to the style of Eniten
There is a certain temptation to write about Chim and other countries concerning which little is known in England. This tempe it created by the sound which a very foreign name gives to a book, and the fact that so little public attention is brought. to bear upon, soon books in England that a verdict is never pronounced upon them. Hence the writers can sequite a kind of reputation which may be useful to in a small way, although it may not be likely to reach pusterity. We would advise people who have been in Chioa to resist this, temptation if they can. We doubt whether a man is jalined in writing. a book evens about China, unless lie has gonrething to Before writing a book he should be aura tell us. that he is able to give us useful information densed rather thad expanded, well-digested thought or amusing stouts suited to the human, mather than the asinine, mind,
