These rebels and their associates are likely to be some. off-shots of the rebellion still existing in Fukien, Kwangtung and Kiangsi, The combined try of Taepings amount to from 80,000 to 100,000 men, women and children, of whom perhaps 20,000 are good fighting men. Their condition is miserable, and if the Imperialists could be induced to pardon some of them, and to keep their promise, we have no doght but that most of thern would accept the amnesty. The cause of the coutinuation of the troubles is owing to the interest any of the ldiers and officers have in the bloodless battles, and to their indifference to the welfare of the people.
