16th April 1856.

Present:

His Excellency The Governor,

The Honorable The Lieutenant Governor,

The Honorable The Chief Justice,

The Honorable The Attorney General,

The Honorable C. B. Hillier, Esquire,

The Honorable J. F. Edger, Esquire,

The Council met to day pursuant to adjournment.

The Minutes of the last Council were read and approved.

The Draft Ordinance "relating to public gaming houses, and for the better Prevention of crime", received the approval of every member of the Council, Mr. Hillier excepted, and the Governor undertook to submit it to Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies by the next outgoing mail.

The Governor then laid on the table a Draft Ordinance "for the better repression of certain "Diseases", which, having been circulated among the members of the Council, His Excellency proposed transmitting home for the approval of Her Majesty's Government. The subject was discussed, and the Members agreeing that the evils complained of were great, and that, if possible, a remedy should be provided by Legislation, it was Resolved that the Draft Ordinance should be again sent round to Members, with a view of eliciting from each, in writing, an opinion as to its general scope and intention, and to invite suggestion of any other and better form of Legislation, either as regards the general principle or the details of the Ordinance in question, for transmission to the Secretary of State.

Read a second time, amended, and passed, the Ordinance entitled "An Ordinance for "Buildings and Nuisances", being No. 8 of 1856, which was ordered to be published in the next Government Gazette.

The Council then adjourned sine die.

(Singed) John Bowring,

Governor

Read and approved

this 19th day of May 1856,

(Signed) L. d'Almada e Castro,

Clerk of Councils.
