The rise in the maternal mortality rate in 1949 was disappointing but an analysis of the causes of death shows that there is no reason to believe that the rise was due to defects in the maternity service, the increase being accounted for en- tirely by the greater number of deaths from toxaemias of pre- gnancy.

54. Throughout the Colony there were reports of a great increase in the severity in the toxaemias of pregnancy but no satisfactory explanation for this has been found. It had pre- viously been assumed that such an increase in severity was associated with nutritional deficiency but there is no evidence
