5. The Laboratory differs from many institutions of its type in that a great amount of material is examined for commercial interests. During the past year, this branch of the work has been quite exceptional both in volume and variety, and a tuble is given (Table 4) showing the range of importa, exports, and manufac- tures which have been examined. The Government certificate in insisted upon by many purchasers abroad of local products. By great efforts on the part of the assistant chemists the work has been kept up to date. The fees collected for this work anaunted to $100,001 as against $37,442 for the previous period.

6. The biochemical work was re-absorbed in to the organization of the Laboratory on lat November, 1947, and the specimens dealt with are shown in the table below (Table 5). It is hoped to fit up a separate small Laboratory for this specialised work during the coming year.
