176. In addition to these public dispensaries there is a village dispensary and a materuity home at Stanley where 6,881 out- patients and 146 maternity cases were cared for among the fishing population. Plans have been laid for a small health centre at Stanley to replace the present dispensary and maternity home which are in nasuitable buildings and it is hoped that the centre will be in operation before the end of 1948.
(1) New Territories Medical Centres und Maternity Homes.
170. There are ten fixed Medical Centres operating in the New Territories together with two mobile units. The work of these fixed and mobile dispensaries was co-ordinated by an officer combining the functions of a medical officer and medical officer- of-health.

178. Up till the outbreak of hostilities the main Ambulance Servies for the Colony was provided by the Fire Brigade with the addition of ambulences attached to St. John Ambulance Brigade (2), Tung Wah Hospital (9), and Medical Department (2).
179. The Medical Department now undertakes the major part of this work, there being 7 ambulance for general cases, 2 for infections cases and 2 in reserve. These ambulances are Insed on the hospitals and were used free of charge during the year. It is, however, intended to fix a scale of charges for the coming year. Two ambulances were on loan to the Chinese hospitals.

VIL-TRAINING OF PERSONNEL.
120. A further group of war time graduates of the Waiversity were accommodatod at the Queen Mary Hospital for the purpose of acquiring further clinical training. This arrangement finally come to an end in September when they sat for an examination.
181. The training of nurses and dressers continued. There were 48 probationer nurses and 9 probationer dressera recruited during the year and 24 nurses and 9 dressers resigned. The total strength of probationer nurses was 77 against an establishreent of 90 and of dressers 17 against an establishment of 28.
182. Health Inspectors have for many yeara been recruited as probationer Health Inspectors. They are trained locally by receiving at least one year's practical training attached to a qualified Inspector in a Health District, at the same time attending a couras of lectures and practical demonstrations. An examination is then beld by the Board of Examiners of the Royal Sanitary Institute (Hong Kong Centre) which, if passed, qualifies for the Sanitary Inspector's Certificate. Inspectors are then encouraged as noon as possible to sit for one or more of the following Royal Sanitary Institute ezsminations —
Sanitary Science as applied to Buildings and Public
Works,
Meat and Other Fooila,
Tropical Hygiene.
183. During the year three Inspectors were examined and obtained the Sanitary Inspector's certificate.
184. Probationer Malarial Inspectors receive a two years" training in laboratory and field work and have to pass an examination before being appointed as Inspector. It is proposed for the future that all probationary Malarial Inspectors should qualify at the Royal Sanitary Institute Sanitary Inspectors examination before specializing in anti-malarial work.
185. The training of dispensers and pharmacists was continued, 3 dispensers and 1 pharmacist qualifying during the
year.
VIII.—TUBERCULOSIS CLINICS.
186. In April, in the absence of any major epidemic, the anti-epidemic officer was able to open a tuberculosis clinis at the Harcourt Health Centre. The clinic was staffed by the anti- epidemic staff. In July throe Almoners were added to assist in the Social Welfare side of the work which rapidly became important.
187. All patients admitted to government tuberculosis beda were passed through the Harcourt Clinic is the first place. A total of 515 patients were admitted during the year,
