the Estuary from the sea, ignoring Hongkong which was quite out of their way, and even if known as a safe anchorage from storms no doubt had an evil reputation for pirate activities.

# If Chuen Pe Forts are what your correspondent enquires about these are the lower forts situated on low hills on the Right Hand when proceeding towards Canton and approaching Tiger Island Fu Mun. The white walls with lookout towers surrounding these fortifications are plainly visible. Postcards with photographs of these forts can be bought in Hongkong, and in some cases are foisted on the unwary as being photographs of the Great Wall. About two miles further up on the same side, on very high land, are the Bocca Tigris Forts. Between Chuen Pe and Bocca Tigris Forts are two small islands heavily fortified. The term Bogue Forts I have always understood to apply to these defences as a whole.

* No town of any size is marked as Chuen Pe on the Charts. At the back of Bocca Tigris Fort (Ham Ung Hoi) there is quite a large town named Tai-Ping.
