Hundreds of prominent citizens from Hongkong and Kowloon attended the opening of the Colony's new Brewery at Sham Tseng Bay, Castle Peak Road, yesterday.
Mrs. Borrett, wife of the General Officer Commanding Major-General, O. C. Borrett, C.B., C.M.G., C.B.E., D.S.O., formally opened the doors of the building with a silver key and her husband in a witty speech toasted the success of the new venture.
A fleet of 100 cars enabled the guests to make the 12-mile journey to the brewery in mid-afternoon and bore them back to town when the inspection of the plant and the sampling of the brew had been well and truly made.
Mr. Stanley H. Dodwell, Chairman and Mr. J. H. Ruttonjee, Managing Director, addressed the Company in the huge matshed decorated with bunting and hung with flags and the former, in recalling the old song "Come where the Booze is Cheaper" pointed out that the price of their beer was just over half the price of the imported product.
