PHILANTHROPIST HONOURED AT CHEUNGCHAU CEREMONY

For his generosity in donating a hospital to the inhabitants of Cheungchau, Mr. Aw Boon-haw, the well-known millionaire philanthropist and proprietor of the Eng Aun Tong, was presented with the silver medal of the Grand Prior and Chapter General of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem yesterday. Mr. Aw's secretary, Mr. Ip Kwai-chung, was invested with a bronze medal of the same order, in recognition of his activities in assisting to raise funds for the building of the hospital.
The hospital, which was opened yesterday by Mrs. Borrett, wife of His Excellency the G.O.C., Major-General O.C. Borrett, is ideally situated on the north-east side of the island, and overlooks a beach, with a view of the neighbouring and smaller islands and the sea.
Mrs. Borrett was presented with a gold key by Mrs. Langley, Secretary of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, on behalf of the Brigade, and a cushion on behalf of the Nursing Division.
Among those present were Mr. A. Morris (Assistant Commissioner of St. John Ambulance Brigade), Mrs. R. Langley (Secretary), Mr. Ralston (Divisional Superintendent), Dr. W.B.A. Moore, Col. and Mrs. Carrington-Sykes, Ip Lan-chuen, Ho Kam-tong, Mr. McKenzie, Mr. LacDougal (District Officer South), Mr. Raymond, Miss Wilson, Dr. Pau Chi-sing, P.H. Sin, Dr. and Mrs. Dovey, Mrs. Ingram, A. el Arculli, Dr. H. el Arculli, Tang Shiu-kin, Horace Lo, Mr. and Mrs. D.O. da Silva, Dr. Mak Luk, Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Ross, Mrs. Ng Man-see (Headmistress of the Mui Fong Girls' School), Messrs. Chan Tit-yat, Wong Tat-wing, Kan Yiu-chor, Siu Ping-sheung, Chai Yue-sang, Lam Chik-ho, Siu Ho-ming, and Lau Ping-chai.
GUARD OF HONOUR
On her arrival at the Cheung-chau wharf, Mrs. Borrett was introduced to Mr. Aw, his secretary (Mr. Ip Kwai-chung), the naifongs of the island, and the Finance Committee.
The Mongkok Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, the Mongkok Division of Nurses, and the students of the Mui Fong Girls' School formed a Guard of Honour at the entrance of the Hospital.
Mrs. Borrett was conducted from the wharf to the hospital, and at the entrance of the hospital, Mr. Morris said:
"It is my especial privilege and honour to introduce to this gathering Mrs. Borrett, who has graciously consented to accept our invitation to perform the formal official ceremony of opening the Aw Par Hospital at Cheungchau.
We, the St. John Organisations, of which there are three, the Order, the Association, and the Brigade, which cover the British Empire, are honoured by your presence.
Mrs. Borrett's interest in the social life, progress, and welfare of all that appertains to this Colony is so well known that it would be dangerous and presumptuous for me to attempt any enumeration of the many spheres and phases of activity in which she is engaged, lest through inadvertence some important social service is omitted.
