Mr. Wood has described to you in his speech the various clinics and other work done by the Tsan Yuk, and also mentioned the names of the ladies and gentlemen who have rendered such great and invaluable services to the hospital which have made it a success. I need not repeat their names here again but wish to associate myself with him in expressing my gratitude and hearty thanks to them all.

SUCCESS DUE TO CO-OPERATION

It is a great satisfaction to me to hear from such an authority as the D.M.S.S. that the Tsan Yuk was well run. I must disclaim any credit to myself but to state that the success of the hospital was entirely due to the splendid co-operation of the matron, the sisters and the nursing staff in carrying out their duties; the invaluable advice and supervision given from time to time by the visiting lady and gentleman medical officers of Chinese Hospitals; the splendid work done on the medical side of the hospital by Professor Tottenham; and lastly, but not the least, the ungrudging support given by the Chairman and General Committee in bearing the cost and expense of running the hospital.

I have always been hoping that more interest will be taken in the welfare of women and children of the poorer class. I felt that to improve the health condition of the colony we must devote our attention to this class of people.

Since the Tsan Yuk took up the baby clinic and the treatment of women's diseases, many of our Chinese Hospitals have taken up a similar line of work. The Colony has now a Baby Welfare Centre and will have a Health Centre soon if it is not already started. This is, in no small degree, due to the great energy of our D.M.S.S. in getting what he wants. If one would glance over the voluminous Medical Report of the Colony for last year, he will be surprised to see what a great stride in health matters has taken place since Dr. Wellington came to the Colony. I feel very happy indeed that my constant plea for the poor is being realized.

Mr. Wood and Dr. Wellington, I thank you both for the very kind remarks you made about me, which I feel I do not deserve.

And before I sit down, I should like to assure Dr. Wellington and Miss Leung, the Matron, who was in the habit of coming to see me during the last 10 years, when anything is in doubt, that if I can do anything for the Tsan Yuk, I shall be pleased to give you my services. (Applause).

The taking of a group photograph terminated the function.
