I visited the place on the Lord's Day just to satisfy myself as to the truth of the many harrowing tales I had heard of the doings of some of our misguided citizens (of both sexes) over there, and was wounded to the soul to see, alas! more than I had ever dreamed of. There were young men, and women too, of the various social grades who with nervous clutch and strained gaze either gathered in their unhallowed gains, or watched their piles diminishing. Truly a pitiable sight!
And to-day, just as in the nineties, there are gambling houses "just over the border." But where are the protests? History has yet to repeat itself in that direction.
