It might be added that most of the gravestones are numbered in irregular order, apparently in connexion with some existing or past record.

The Supreme Court records of 1845 disclose extraordinary conduct on the part of Lieutenant MacDonald of the 98th Regiment towards Major Caine in his capacity of Sheriff, and in connection with a writ of the Supreme Court issued against Lieutenant MacDonald and addressed to the Sheriff for execution.

The following are the facts. In July 1844, a quarrel took place between some soldiers of the 98th Regiment and the European inhabitants of a lane adjacent to the market place. The soldiers having been severely beaten, it was rumoured the following evening that the men of the 98th Regiment had determined on avenging the injury done to their comrades by attacking the inhabitants of the lane. As a precautionary measure, a picquet was ordered out to patrol the town, and prevent any irregularity on the part of the military.
