PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

Addressing those present, Mr. K.S. Pavri said: The object of our gathering here to-day is to celebrate the golden jubilee of Mr. H. Ruttonjee, and on behalf of everybody present I offer our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Ruttonjee.

"Mr. Ruttonjee left Bombay on July 29, 1884, on the steamer Berenes, and arrived here on August 21. He joined P.F. Davar & Company as an assistant the day after his arrival, and after working there for a year and a half he joined B.P. Karenjia & Company, opium merchants, as manager of their Canton branch.

"Mr. Ruttonjee, however, soon tired of his junior position, and through his business acumen and energy he started a firm of his own, known as H. Ruttonjee & Company, and he soon became well-known in the Far East as a merchant. In 1906 Mr. Ruttonjee went on a tour of the world, and in 1913 he retired from active life.

"Throughout his residence here, Mr. Ruttonjee has been well known for his honest and straightforward dealings, and through these qualities he met with his success. From his youth he has showed himself a very active and energetic worker, and the hard life he has led has stood him in good stead until now.

CHARITABLE DISPOSITION

"Apart from his work, Mr. Ruttonjee has shown himself to be of a very charitable disposition, and he has made no distinction of race or creed in the hospitality he extends to everybody.
