Brigade, and generally may take such measures as may appear expedient for the protection of life and property, and may, by himself or by his men, break into or through and take possession of, or blow up with gunpowder or pull down, any premises for the purpose of putting an end to a fire.

(2.) The Superintendent of the said Brigade or other officer in charge thereof may close any street in or near which a fire is burning and may remove any persons who interfere by their presence with the operations of the said Brigade.

(3.) Any officer or member of the said Brigade acting bonâ fide under this Ordinance and the powers hereby conferred shall not be liable to any action for damages for any act done under this section.

(4.) Any damage occasioned by the said Brigade in the execution of their duties shall be deemed to be damage by fire within the meaning of any policy of insurance against fire.

7. Every person who is required by the Superintendent or officer for the time being in charge of the Fire Brigade to co-operate with any Fire Brigade, whether consisting of volunteers or not, so that the same or in are approved by the Governor, or in the working of any fire engine, the suppression of fire shall be bound to obey such requisition, under a penalty, for every case of disobedience, not exceeding fifty dollars.

8. All offences under this Ordinance shall be triable before a Police Magistrate, who shall have power to enforce all penalties hereby imposed or which may be imposed by any order of the Governor-in-Council.

A.D. 1868. AN ORDINANCE to assimilate the Law of this Colony respecting Treasonable Offences to the Law of the United Kingdom.

Repeal of provisions of

WHEREAS it is expedient to assimilate the law of this Colony respecting treasonable offences to the law of the United Kingdom:

Be it therefore enacted by the Governor of Hongkong, with the advice of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:--

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Treasonable Offences Ordinance, 1868.

2. From and after the commencement of this Ordinance, the provisions 36 Geo. 3 c. 7 of the Act 36 George 3 Chapter 7, entitled "An Act for the Safety and

Preservation...able and s George 3 of an Act for the Safety and Security of His Majesty's Person and Government against Treasonable and Seditious Practices and Attempts, and the like provisions of an Act passed in the same year, entitled 'An Act for the Safety and Security of His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, and the Restriction of the Persons who may be entitled to sit and vote in the House of Lords during the continuance of His Royal Highness's illness, and the like provisions of an Act made and passed in the 57th year of the reign of His Majesty King George the Third, entitled 'An Act to make perpetual certain Parts of an Act passed in the 36th year of the Reign of His Majesty King George the Third, for the Safety and Security of His Majesty's Person and Government against Treasonable and Seditious Practices and Attempts,' shall be in force in this Colony, and shall have the same force and effect as if the same respectively had been enacted by the Legislature of this Colony.

3. If any person within this Colony compasses, imagines, invents, devises, or intends to deprive or depose Her Majesty, her heirs or successors, from the style, honour, or royal name of the Imperial Crown of the United Kingdom, or of any other of Her Majesty's dominions, or to levy war against Her Majesty, her heirs or successors, within this Colony, or by any means whatsoever to incite or stir up any person or persons within this Colony to attempt to intimidate or overawe either House of Parliament, or to incite or stir up any person or persons within this Colony to attempt to put in force or any device or means whatsoever to intimidate or overawe the Legislative Council or the Governor of this Colony, or to intimidate or overawe either House of the Imperial Parliament, or to levy war against Her Majesty within the United Kingdom, or to put in force within this Colony any treason or treasons whatsoever, and such compassings, imaginations, inventions, devices, or intentions, or any of them, shall express, utter, or declare, by publishing any printing or writing, or by any overt act or deed, such person or persons so offending shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof shall be liable, at the discretion of the Court, to be imprisoned for any term not less than two years, or for life, or to suffer death, or to be confined during Her Majesty's pleasure, or for any term not exceeding two years...

4. Piracy by virtue of the statute (11 Will. 3 c. 7) is hereby declared to be piracy, and all persons guilty of piracy, as defined by the said statute, or by any statute amending or re-enacting the same, are hereby declared to be pirates, and shall be liable to be tried, convicted, and punished as such...
