Citation

These regulations may be cited as the Poisons List Regulations.

Interpretation

In the Poisons List set out in the Schedule, unless the context otherwise requires-

(a) a reference to a substance shall include a reference to that substance prepared either from natural sources or artificially;

(b) a reference to a substance shall include a reference to that substance when contained as such in any preparation, solution, mixture or natural substance;

(c) a "derivative" is an organic compound which is related to another organic compound (henceforth called the "parent compound") by virtue of its having-

(i) the same elemental ring and/or chain, nucleus or skeleton;

and

(ii) similar pharmaceutical activity. It may have a molecular weight which may be the same as, or higher or lower (for example, after formation of a derivative by the process commonly known as dehydrogenation) than that of the parent compound, and its preparation may or may not require the presence of the parent compound;

(d) substances listed under the headings "A" are those whose uses are essentially medicinal, whilst substances listed under the headings "B" are not normally used medicinally.
