161. Tracker dogs were called out 360 times during the year and five arrests were made. Police dogs took part in Dog Shows and Obedience Trials in April 1967 and March 1968 and on both occasions, in competition with Army dogs, won the Police Dog Trials Challenge Shield.
COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT BRANCH
162. This Branch, which is responsible to the Operations Wing of Police Headquarters, is commanded by a Senior Superintendent assisted by a Senior Staff Officer.
Communications Section
163. The technical personnel of this Section who are responsible for planning, installing, commissioning and maintaining radio networks and electronic equipment are civilian staff. The officer in-charge is the Controller, Police Communications. He is supported by an Assistant Controller who is responsible for the activities of the three Radio Workshops located in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. The staff of the section number 68.
164. An Executive Officer maintains statistical records for 1,250 official telephones and supervises the work of the clerical staff of the Branch. A junior Police Officer supervises Control Room Staff, tele- printer staff and telephone operators who together number 76 N.C.O.'s and constables. The Police Radio Stores is controlled by a Senior Stores Officer who has a staff of four Stores Supervisors and one clerk.
165. The Radio Re-organization Scheme which was completed early in 1967 provided a ten network system of five main and five sub- sidiary networks, the latter being provided for mobile Police company communications. This was put to the test during the disturbances which took place later in the year and the result showed that the work and finance put into the Scheme had been fully justified.
166. 918 fixed and mobile radio installations and 15 radar installa- tions were in operation during the year. In addition, 616 other electronic devices and 566 types of flood lights, beacons and similar equipment were also maintained by this Section. Public address and floodlighting systems were provided on 84 occasions.
167. During the year 47,089 telephone calls were received by District Control Rooms. Of this total 24,843 were '999' calls, 639 of
