Constables. The patrols, consisting of one section (one N.C.O. and 3 Constables) go out for four-day periods visiting the remote areas of the New Territories and some of the outlying islands. On some occasions during the year staff of the Information Services Department accom- panied these patrols.

EMERGENCY UNITS

157. In Hong

In Hong Kong Island and New Territories Districts and in Kowloon East and West sub-districts, there are Emergency Units manned by Uniformed Branch personnel. These units operate on a 24-hour basis, manning patrol cars which are in radio contact with their District Control Rooms. The patrol cars are directed to give assistance at the scene of incidents reported by the public or to deal with incidents encountered on patrol and are also available to assist police officers on beat duties. The units also provide prisoner and cash escorts and con- stitute a reserve which can be called upon at any time to deal with unexpected disasters or disorders.

WOMEN POLICE

158. The establishment remained 430. Two local Inspectorate Officers were confirmed in the rank of Senior Inspector, one of whom was chosen to make a study visit to the United Kingdom. This was the first occasion on which a local Officer had been afforded such an opportunity.

159. In addition to normal beat duties and investigation work Women Police were usefully employed in crowd control during all the major Chinese festivals, and assisted in preventive measures against illegal gambling syndicates, during the racing season. Trial use of Women Police in the operation of radio and the '999' system at Kow- loon District Headquarters proved successful. Women Police in Traffic Branch rendered valuable assistance in a campaign to teach the public the DO's and DON'Ts affecting pedestrians. Eleven Police women re- ceived commendations from their Commanding Officers.

POLICE DOG UNIT

160. The establishment of the Unit is one Senior Inspector, four N.C.O.S and thirty-one P.C. handlers. The establishment of dogs is thirty-five, some being Alsatians and some Dobermanns.
