PREVENTION OF CRIME OFFICE
120. This Office was reorganized during the year and now consists of an Identification Bureau, a Criminal Records Office, an Interpol Sub-Bureau, a Vetting Section, a Deportation and Police Supervision Section and a Disposal of Dangerous Drugs Unit.
Identification Bureau
121. The Bureau is divided into four sections: fingerprint records, scene of crime, document examination and photographic section.
122. During the year 53,260 fingerprint forms were received at the Bureau for examination, an increase of 1,046 compared with the previous year. Following examination of the prints, 19,605 persons were identified in the Criminal Records Office. In addition the identity of 100 deceased persons was established. The total number of fingerprints filed in the main collection is now 257,200.
123. The single fingerprint collection was increased by 230 prints, bringing the total to 58,260 representing 5,826 persons who have been convicted of robbery, breaking and similar offences. Fingerprint officers from the Scene of Crimes Section attended 211 serious cases during the year and obtained 64 individual prints from which 10 persons were identified.
124. Personnel from the Photographic Section, including divisional photographers, took 73,397 photographs and produced 193,343 prints from them. They attended Courts on 492 occasions in order to give scene of crime photographic evidence. In addition 161,580 documents were micro-filmed on behalf of other government departments in order to reduce their storage requirements.
