CRIME

82. During the year the total number of reports dealt with by the Police was 489,009 a decrease of 146,042 compared with the preceding year. Of the 489,009 reports dealt with 168,493 disclosed no offence. Reported offences amounted therefore to 320,516 as compared with 422,737 in 1966-67. A breakdown of these reports in the various cate- gories together with comparative figures for the previous four years is shown in Appendix 12. The number of crimes recorded showed an increase of 11.8% over the preceding year; and prosecutions of persons for crime numbered 12,350 an increase of 21.2% over 1966-67. Hawking, obstruction and minor narcotics and traffic offences decreased consider- ably and were mainly responsible for the reduction in the number of offences reported during the year. The appreciable decrease in these types of offences dealt with during the year is largely attributable to the fact that for many months the Force was primarily concerned with carrying out Internal Security duties.

83. An analysis of crime over the past 5 years is also given in Appendix 12 attached. Comparative tables showing cases of crime (excluding minor narcotics offences) reported and detected, and juveniles and adults prosecuted, over the past three years are shown in Appen-
