10. The next phase in the programme of disturbances began at the end of June and took the form of bomb terrorism. Bombs, some genuine some fake, were planted everywhere, not only in the urban area but also in rural parts of the New Territories. In particular they were planted in such a way as to disrupt transport services, many being placed on tram-lines and along bus routes and sometimes even on vehicles themselves. In all more than 9,000 reports of bombs were received, of which on investigation about 1,500 were found to be genuine. Altogether fifteen persons were killed by bomb explosions and three hundred and forty were injured. The Police Force took active steps in combating this menace. Communist premises were raided; bomb-making sources were traced; terrorist leaders were arrested; and combined Police/ Military bomb disposal squads were formed. A spectacular raid on a communist multi-storey building was carried out in August, naval helicopters being used to land personnel on the roof of this building which was known to be well protected against attack from below but not from above. The bomb campaign came to an end on 23rd December when the last report of a genuine bomb was received.
11. Throughout the period of confrontation the atmosphere on the Border was tense and incidents flared up from time to time. The most serious of these took place on 8th July at Sha Tau Kok Village. This resulted in the death of five police officers and in serious injury to five others.
12. Throughout these difficult months, in spite of threats and inducements made by communist elements and notwithstanding the personal attacks to which they were subjected, all ranks of the Police Force inspired confidence in the minds of the overwhelmingly law- abiding majority of the population, and helped to sustain the resolve of the general public at a time of considerable strain.
13. By the end of 1967 law and order prevailed throughout the Colony. Nearly 2,000 persons had been arrested and convicted of various offences connected with the disturbances. Ten police officers had been killed and two hundred and twelve injured in the course of duty.
