198. The past year saw the innovation of the Commandant's Commen- dation (the equivalent of a Commanding Officer's Commendation in the regular Force) which was awarded to 15 officers for arresting criminals, both on and off duty. Three members of the Force were awarded the Colonial Police Medal for Meritorious Service and 64 members were awarded the Colonial Special Constabulary Medal or Clasp for long service.
199. The year under review saw the Auxiliary Force playing a most important role in support of their regular colleagues during the April Kowloon disturbances when the Auxiliaries were fully mobilized and integrated with the regular Force. The Auxiliary Riot Company in Kow- loon was fully operational and at one stage actively engaged rioters. The Marine Auxiliaries took over all harbour patrol duties.
POLICE BAND
200. The Police Band, commanded by the Director of Music, consists of two sections, a conventional military band and a drum and pipe band. In addition to its main function of providing music at ceremonial occasions and Police parades, it played on numerous occasions at public concerts, race meetings, football matches and other public functions.
PART VII
WELFARE AND RECREATION
GENERAL
201. The Force Welfare Officer is responsible for advising on the welfare of the Rank & File and their families. He is in charge of the Welfare Section, a part of Police Headquarters, which deals with loans and grants, Police Schools, pensioners, assistance to Police widows and orphans, welfare equipment, sport and other entertainments. Where neces- sary, he advises and assists in the settlement of matrimonial disputes and gives other types of assistance.
THE POLICE FORCE WELFARE FUND
202. This fund is established under the Police Force Ordinance and is controlled by the Commissioner. It provides loans and, in cases of special distress, grants for serving or retired Police Officers in need of
