MARINE DISTRICT

160. The Marine Police are responsible for policing the Harbour, all the waters of the Colony and all the outlying islands including Lantau and are commanded by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, with a Senior Superintendent of Police as his second in command. The establish- ment for the District for the year 1966-67 was 1,170.

161. Operationally, the District is divided into four main sections: (a) the Administration and Training section which co-ordinates all Marine activities, organizes in-service training courses and in- cludes the District Control Room which is the Communication Centre;

(b) the Harbour and Islands Section, including Marine Harbour Police Station, the Harbour, Green Island Post, Cheung Chau, Lamma Island Post, Mui Wo, Peng Chau Island Post, Shek Pik Post and Tai O with rural posts at Fan Lau and Tung Chung; (c) Sectors and Bases which are responsible for all the patrol launches operating outside Harbour limits and for the administration of all Marine Police bases;

(d) the C.I.D. who carry out enquiries and investigations in connection with criminal activities within the District and with illegal immigra- tion into the Colony.

162. There are 39 vessels in the Marine Police fleet together with six launches from the Commerce and Industry Department, making a total of 45 craft.

163. Outside the Harbour limits, the waters of the Colony are divided into five Sectors with a number of patrol launches attached to each Sector. A Stor operates as a unit roughly equivalent to a sub-division of a land district.

Illegal Immigration

164. While there is no evidence to suggest that there has been any large scale movement of illegals attempting to enter Hong Kong during the year, the prevention of illegal immigration remains one of the main tasks of the Marine District. During the year a total of 84,426 craft were
