102. Hawking, obstruction, and gambling offences grouped within the category of Miscellaneous Offences showed a substantial increase compared with the previous year, and were mainly responsible for the increased number of offences recorded. There were 261,795 reports which did not, after investi- gation, prove to warrant further police action. Of these 483 were originally classified as Serious Crimes, and 261,312 as Miscellaneous Cffences. The tables at Appendices 15 and 16 show trends in Serious Crime over the past three years, together with the number of persons prosecuted divided in adults and juveniles. In addition the tables at Appendices 17 and 18 provide an analysis of Narcotic Offences (excluding those classified as Serious Crime) and the number and type of persons prosecuted.
SERIOUS CRIME
103. There were 17,076 cases of Serious Crime, an increase of 2,831 compared with the preceding year, and the highest reported figure since 1959-60 when 17,433 cases were recorded. This increase occurred in nearly all categories of serious crime and was most significant in crimes of violence such as serious assaults, robberies and demanding with menaces. However of this increase 547 cases were recorded in those offences which are generally disclosed as a result of preventive action taken by the police e.g. loitering and possession of unlawful instruments.
