applied in the previous year were also taken on strength. Total enlistments for the year were 745. There were 390 applications under investigation at the end of the

year.

66. 470 recruit constables completed their training during the year, and 456 were still under training on 31st March, 1965. The recruiting standards for Police Constables are shown at Appendix 7.

67. 43 Women Police Constables were recruited. 61 (including 36 who were under training at the close of the previous year) completed their training and passed out from the school and 18 were still undergoing training at the end of the year. There were 31 applications under investigation at the end of the year.

POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL

68. The Hong Kong Police Training School is situated at Wong Chuk Hang near Aberdeen, on the south side of Hong Kong Island about nine miles from the centre of Victoria.

69. New building has continued throughout the year. On 29th November, 1964 the Officers' Mess and Quarters were completed. The Officers' Mess is the first of its kind in the Hong Kong Police. The quarters, which consist of 66 rooms, are run as a hostel.

70. The classroom block was completed and occupied on 6th March, 1965. This block consists of 24 classrooms, a mock court room and a model report room.

71. The assembly hall and gymnasium and the band practice room are due to be completed by 20th April, 1965, the drill shed by mid May and the Rank and File Married Quarters by the end of October. Later in 1965, work will commence on the Staff Officers' Married Quarters, Woman Police Quarters and the Administration block.

72. The School is commanded by a Senior Superintendent with a Super- intendent as his deputy. The establishment of the School comprises 1 Chief Inspector, 8 Senior Inspectors, 38 Inspectors, 44 Non-Commissioned Officers and 9 Constables who are engaged on instruction, recruitment and administra- tion of the School. Two specialist Police Training Officers advise on all matters concerning training Police courses, new teaching techniques, all Police examinations and the preparation of many different forms of instructional notes. The Senior Force Training Officer is also a qualified barrister and serves on the staff of Police Headquarters; the other Training Officer has long experience of Police Training in Great Britain and is attached directly to the Training School. These two officers have done much to improve the standard of training throughout the Force.
