POLICE SCHOOLS
250. There are now five primary schools in which children of police officers have priority in allocation of places. These schools are located in the police quarters at Hollywood Road and Arsenal Street in Hong Kong, and at Canton Road, Cheung Sha Wan and Tin Kwong Road in Kowloon. They are administered and staffed by the Education Depart- ment. Any vacant places in the schools which are not required by children of police officers are made available for open allocation by the Education Department. At the end of the year 3,187 children of police officers were attending these five primary schools.
251. The two post-primary evening classes started at the Arsenal Street and Cheung Sha Wan Schools in February 1963 have continued. Classes are held three times a week and the courses extend over a period of three years. The classes are designed for children who have failed for a number of reasons to obtain a place in a secondary school. The subjects taught extend the children's education into the secondary field but no special certificates are issued. 157 children were attending these courses at the end of the year. Parents are showing an increasing interest in sending their children to these classes.
252. Twenty-four Police Welfare Scholarships were awarded during the
year to children who had obtained the best results in the Joint Primary Examination. The total number of scholarships awarded at the end of the year was 90.
253. The Hong Kong and Kowloon Scout Troops formed in January 1963 are now 45 and 60 strong respectively. The New Territories Troop has 28 members. In January the Kowloon Police Girl Guides Company was formed and has 17 members.
254. The Hitzig Scholarship, a private donation by an American forensic pathologist to provide higher education for a child of a serving police officer has been awarded to the son of a Corporal. He is studying at the United College, one of the three foundations constituting the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
255. The Tenth Annual Joint Primary Schools Sports Meeting was held at the Police Football Ground, Boundary Street on 20th December. In addition to the award of prizes to successful competitors, food parcels and soft drinks were provided for all the children.
