newly built accommodation enabled women recruits to reside in the School, and thus take a full part in the life there. Previously they had been transported to and from the School each day.

POLICE DOG UNIT
215. The Police Dog Unit has its Headquarters at Pat Heung in the New Territories. It consists of a Senior Inspector in charge and an establishment of 4 N.C.Os. and 33 P.Cs.
216. The dog establishment is 35 consisting of 30 patrol dogs and 5 tracker dogs. At the end of the year there were 29 dogs on strength:- 18 Alsations and 6 Dobermanns for patrol work and 5 Dobermann trackers. The 2 opium location dogs on strength during 1962-63 have been diverted to other work since their use proved to be too limited to justify their specialist role and training.
217. Dogs have continued to be of great value in supporting police action against illegal immigrants. Their use has contributed directly to 17 arrests. They have also been of value in cases involving breaking and entering.
218. 8 constables have undergone training as dog handlers during the year. 3 have completed their course; 5 were still under training at the end of the year.
219. At the end of the year arrangements were well in hand at the Police Kennels for starting an internal breeding programme. This will result in an adequate supply of dogs of an improved standard. At present dogs are purchased from overseas or are donated by members of the public. At the same time plans were under detailed consideration for expanding the Dog Unit. It is hoped that it will move to new and larger premises within the next two years. As part of this expansion a new standard design of kennel has been prepared by the Public Works Depart-
ment.
220. The Unit was very successful at the Hong Kong Kennel Club Show held on the 22nd March, 1964. Police dogs won five 1st prizes, four 2nd prizes and four 3rd prizes. A Police handler received the prize for the best handler of the Show, and a handler and dog won the Obedience Trophy.
