TRIAD SOCIETY BUREAU

140. The Triad Society menace remains potentially strong and con- tinuous police action by this bureau has prevented cohesion among triad societies which have thus been reduced to fragmented groups. During the year, prosecutions for the offence of membership were generally restricted to persons holding office or prominent positions in a triad society. Some of the more vicious elements accused of violence, extortion or intimidation in the perpetration of triad activities, who for various reasons could not be brought to trial, were dealt with by the Deportation and Detention Advisory Tribunal.

141. Triad society activities are closely linked with vice such as narcotics, gambling and prostitution, the principal aim being protection and extortion.
