116. Traffic, gambling, hawking and obstruction offences grouped within the category of Miscellaneous Offences showed a substantial increase compared with the previous year, and were mainly responsible for the increased number of reports made. There were 217,023 reports which did not, after investigation, prove to warrant further police action. Of these, 669 were originally classified as Serious Crimes, and 216,354 as Miscellaneous Offences. The tables at Appendices 13 to 26 of this report provide a detailed analysis of the volume and types of crime for the year. The comparative tables and charts show the trends in crime over the past three years. In addition a general analysis is given of serious crime by age groups.
SERIOUS CRIME
117. There were 14,245 cases of Serious Crime, a decrease of 415 compared with the preceding year, and the lowest reported figure for the past 10 years. The offences in which these decreases mainly occurred were snatching from the person, larceny from vehicles, indecent assaults and larceny by trick. Burglaries, and breakings, particularly those in- volving multi-storey buildings, showed an increase.
118. Of the 14,245 cases of Serious Crime investigated 10,082 were cleared up, giving an overall detection rate of 70.8% compared with 69.7% in the previous year.
JUVENILE CRIME
119. A total of 979 juveniles (i.e. those under 16 years of age) were arrested and prosecuted for Serious Crime, representing 14% of the total number of persons prosecuted compared with 16.3% in the previous year. Of these, 45 were for robberies, 63 for woundings, 21 for various breakings, 4 for affray and 5 for triad membership.
