12. By the end of the year the number of registered vehicles on the roads was almost 75,400, an increase of some 9,800 over the previous year's figures. These increases, and restrictions on the use of many roads occasioned by new building development, prevented any improvement in traffic conditions and parking. Pending the radical improvements to the Colony's roads which Government has in hand, or is considering, this problem will continue to remain one of the most serious facing the police.

13. Throughout the year the severe water shortage necessitated special police assistance at the public standpipes provided in the more densely populated urban areas. Police presence ensured proper queueing and fair shares.

14. In general there were greater demands on the Uniformed Branch in the urban areas to deal with problems and incidents arising directly from the swollen population: very large crowds at football matches and other public entertainments, large bus queues, hawkers obstructing public thoroughfares, and jay-walking. Large concentrations of people in circumstances where excitement or petty irritation can easily change to an angrier mood are becoming a matter of increasing concern to the Force.

15. The Force continued to receive excellent co-operation from the Director of Information Services and his staff, and generally there was a noticeable improvement in police relations with the public and the

press.
