from the section to the new Anti-Illegal Immigration Branch. By the end of the year most of these officers had been replaced.

AIDS-TO-INVESTIGATION SECTION

139. All the sections briefly described below are housed in the Police Headquarters building at Arsenal Street and come under the direct control of C.I.D. Headquarters.

Identification Bureau

140. The fingerprint records section, scene of crime section, photo- graphic section and questioned documents section constitute this Bureau.

141. 31,932 new fingerprint forms have been received, 3,912 more than in the previous year. In addition 18,100 fingerprints were checked for security vetting purposes. 42 identifications were established from fingerprints found at scenes of crime. At the close of the year 43,460 single fingerprints were on file under the Battley system.

142. The Scene of Crime Section attended 99 scenes and 316 articles were forwarded to the Section for examination.

143. The Photographic Section attended 2,922 scenes of crime and 797 traffic accidents. The number of photographs taken increased from 38,430 to 50,003. 121,700 documents were micro-filmed for other Government departments.

144. In order to ease the demands made on the services of C.I.D. photographers, a number of police officers in the Districts have been trained to take photographs at scenes of crime, traffic accidents and emergencies. A new dark room has been provided in Police Head- quarters, Kowloon to deal with routine photography in the Kowloon and New Territories Districts.

145. The Questioned Documents Section examined 855 manuscript and 270 typewritten documents compared with 1,645 and 294 in the previous year.

Criminal Records Office

146. This office is responsible for collecting, filing and supplying the Force with information on criminals, crimes, lost or stolen property, missing and found persons and unidentified dead bodies. 199,000 indices are held by the office. In addition there are 170,000 files on criminal cases and investigations and 22,500 record cards of criminals convicted of serious offences.
