89. Three officers have been promoted to the rank of senior superin- tendent, three advanced to superintendent, eleven promoted to assistant superintendent and fifty-one appointed to senior inspector: all from within the Force.

RECRUITMENT
90. The recruiting standards and Conditions of Service for Junior Officers and Constables are shown at Appendices 3, 4 and 7. During the year some minor modifications to the standards were made on the advice of the Crown Agents and of the Committee referred to in paragraph 25. 44 overseas and 45 local male and 3 women candidates were recruited for direct entry as probationary inspectors and 6 male officers were promoted to inspector from the rank and file of the Force. 27 overseas and 40 local male and 4 women probationary inspectors completed their initial training at the School. At the end of the year there were 30 overseas and 27 local probationary inspectors still under- going training.
91. A total of 8,411 applicants for the post of Police constable were interviewed and tested and of these 549 were accepted. A further 28 ex-constables who had resigned from the Force were accepted for re- appointment and 47 who applied in the previous year were also enlisted. The total enlistments for the year were 624. There were 184 applications under investigation at the end of the year and 20 were on the waiting list.
POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL
92. The Hong Kong Police Training School is situated at Wong Chuk Hang near Aberdeen, a rural area on the south side of Hong Kong Island about nine miles from the centre of Victoria.
93. Extensive re-building of the school is in progress and the first phase, the construction of modern barrack accommodation, mess and recreation rooms to accommodate 800 members of the rank and file, will be completed by the middle of 1963. Work will then start on the second phase to provide class rooms, mock courts, an assembly hall, drill shed, band practice rooms and junior officers' quarters and mess.
